Golden Bond Had Puppies!
Alice in Goldenland

Alice
Alice begins her journey with Golden Bond.
Spring means many things to all of us — farmers working in the fields, baby lambs and horses and bunnies, beautiful tulips and lilacs and flowering trees filled with the happy songs of birds nesting and bringing forth new life into our world.

At Golden Bond Rescue, this springtime season has an even more special reason to celebrate the goodness and newness in the world. Our volunteers have happily worked together with fellow dog lovers to give second-chance Golden Retrievers opportunities for the very best forever home possible. Our Success Stories are a testament to the results.

Alice recently came into our Golden Bond family because her owners were unable to care for her. She quickly captivated our hearts and all of us are committed to give her the very best love and care that is possible. We do that for each and every Golden who is entrusted into our care, and that is our mission.

Alice is different from any of our other Goldens because she is soon going to be a mother! This sweet and precious bundle of love wrapped in silken fur is in need of very exceptional care. Alice is being tenderly administered to by Diana, one of our volunteers, who has graciously turned her life upside down and her home into a birthing center. She'll gently care for Alice and her brood of puppies until they are all ready for their forever homes.

If you can find room in your hearts to help contribute to Golden Bond rescue to help with the upcoming (and ongoing) expenses for Alice's care, it would be most appreciated. Even the smallest amount will be put to good use, as our group consists of all volunteers.

Bless you for thinking of Alice and best wishes.

Update April 21, 2005: The Puppies are Here!

Alice
Alice gave birth to 11 puppies!
As the bright full moon sailed past the Cascade Mountains and over the Willamette Valley, Thursday evening, Alice brought the first of her precious puppies into the world. Diana's midwifery skills were definitely needed and appreciated and it was a long and busy night for everyone.

The evening sky was full of shining stars to welcome Alice's eleven little furry creatures to Golden Bond's large and extended family. Morning's first light reflected that her new babies were black as raven's wings, confirming that their father was indeed the black Laborador Retriever who lived next door at Alice's former home.

Alice is proving to be an excellent mother, caring gently for all her babies. All the puppies are unnamed, save the smallest who has been named Mouse (for the Dormouse). Diana is taking extra care to ensure all the puppies get an opportunity to share when it's nursing time. Occasionally, Alice can enjoy a few moments outside, to roll in the grass and have some quiet time, before her maternal instincts kick in and she returns to her babies.

Alice and her family will have their first visit to the veterinarian on Wednesday, April 27, 2005. We'll continue to share more information as these next few days goes by.

The puppy pictures start on Gallery 3, but if you haven't seen Gallery 1 and Gallery 2, don't miss them.

Update April 26, 2005: Alice and her puppies are doing well.

Alice
Alice and her puppies.
Foster mom has been sending messages about me and my babies, but now it's my turn. All eleven of my brood are doing fine, gaining weight every day and becoming more vocal all the time. Today they all learned how to stretch. Foster mom is changing all the pretty collars for new ones because the old one are getting too small. Number 6 likes to sleep on his back. Number 11 is a squawker. Even though a few are smaller, none is a weakling.

We made our first trip as a family on Wednesday. Foster mom loaded the babies in a big warm basket and put me in the travel crate. We dropped off the two big dogs at 'school' and we went to see Dr. Jones, a very nice man who sat down on the floor with my babies and made sure they were all, all right. He told me my babies are all healthy, have good hearts and are vigorous (what does that mean?). When we got home, Mom found Number 4 who was hiding when we left and had to stay home. He didn't mind at all. Mom and the folks where Dr. Jones is all thought it was pretty funny. But, I knew all the time he was missing and I worried.

As for me, I get a little tired and try to eat all the food that I can. I don't have enough spigots to feed all babies at one time. Sometimes, Foster Mom brings me just two or three who have the hardest time climbing over their big brothers and sisters. Then, she sits with me, reading about what will happen to us in the next few weeks, while the little guys get an extra chance at the buffet. Some of my fur is beginning to fall out (Foster Mom says that's what goes with having puppies). I love my walks outside — especially rolling in the grass and cooling my milk dispensaries. Uncle Moores usually comes, too, and shows me the best places to sniff and do other things.

The babies are nine days old now. Next week they will start being able to see and work at standing up on their own.

Mom says that she tried to take a picture of each baby, but some didn't come out very well because she was having a hard time holding the puppy and the camera still at the same time. Attached are some that did come out okay.

Aren't you impressed by how computer literate I have become, in addition to caring for 11 babies. I'm a pretty swell golden girl.

Bye for now.

Alice is Adopted June 20, 2005

Alice
The end of Alice's story is one that ends in "happily ever after". Her name is now Gretchen-Alice and she has quickly become one of the family. She has met many new people over the course of the last 2 weeks and has done nothing but become more confident around strangers. She even has a new best friend who lives next door — an Australian cattle dog named Titus.

We knew she was our perfect match the minute we saw the little black spot on the end of her tongue. We don't know why, but that little endearing feature sealed the deal! She jumped right into our car after a last goodbye to her wonderful foster mom, Diana. She loves to ride in the car and settled right down for the ride from Eugene to Salem. We took her into our backyard first to run around — which she did at warp speed. After the backyard tour, we tried the indoor one — she was very hesitant at first, but as soon as she saw her stash of toys, she settled right in. Susan's work had a doggie shower for Gretchen-Alice and she received more toys and treats than she knew what to do with! It was a riot watching her try to decide which toy to play with first.

It has been better and better each day. We have been working on training and walking on a leash. We go for wonderful early morning walks to start the day. Derric had surgery in June and will not be mobile until late August/early September, so he will join us as soon as he is able. Since he has the whole summer off to heal, Gretchen-Alice has been a wonderful companion.

We are still working on the cat issue. Our 2 cats are not happy and it will be a slow process to get them together, but we're confident that it will happen eventually.

We wanted to thank Sue, Jay and Diana for their help in finding the perfect addition to our little family.
