Success Story: Max (#1252), now Maxx

Adopted July, 2005

Max
I was adopted by Jim and Betty in July of this year. My new family includes a Dad, a Mom and three indoor/outdoor cats. For a while, I had a new "sister," an absolutely beautiful 13 year-old Golden Retriever named Abby, but sadly she had to cross the Rainbow Bridge in November. Mom and Dad also had another Golden named Ben, that I never met because he died at age 12 last April. My new family says they're really glad I came to live with them now, after having lost their beloved Abby and Ben just seven months apart. They say my antics help them turn their tears to laughter.

Since I was four when I was adopted, I already knew my old name (Max) pretty well. But my new family told me that I was Xtra special, so they gave me another "x" for my name. Now I'm Maxx, with two x's. Pretty cool, huh? I'm still pretty well behaved. I sit and lie down when I'm told to, and always come when I'm called, even by my new name!

Abby and Ben left me all their toys. There must be hundreds of them. About half of them squeak and I keep them on the floor all over the house. Mom and Dad keep telling me to put my toys away in the toy box, but I generally prefer to leave them in every room in the house so I can easily grab one or two in my mouth so my folks can throw them for me. (It's a retriever kind of thing.) My record so far is three in my mouth at the same time.

So, I live on this seven acre park with a creek and a barn and about 1000 trees. I like to think of them, however, as fire hydrants. Every once in a while I see a bunch of deer in the park, but Dad says I shouldn't chase them. I'm getting along fine with the three cats. One pretty much ignores me. She's kind of a snob. Another cat keeps grooming my face and playing with my tail. The third cat sleeps with me on the bed at night. Don't tell anybody. I don't want my brother and sister Goldens to think I'm some whimpy cat lover who sleeps on a bed every night.

My favorite new hobbies include being brushed, riding in the back of the SUV with my head out the window, begging for treats at the drive-up window at the bank, playing shadow with Mom and Dad, taking long walks on our country road, cataloging all the new smells around my new home, playing fetch and running as fast as I can. My old family said I barked a lot, but I hardly ever bark any more, except when I think my new family or home is in imminent danger. I'm very protective and sometimes I surprise myself on how vicious I can look and sound. Heh! Have really gotten good at fooling strangers!

Even though I'm a strong, energetic 85 pounds and still half puppy, I like a good lap, an ear rub and a snuggle. My new Mom and Dad really give me a lot of attention, and the fact that I'm always with them makes petting and touching pretty easy. You know, once I figured out what pleases my folks (and what I can get away with), getting my way is pretty easy stuff.

I'm looking forward to playing in the snow this winter and going swimming next summer. My new family says I might even get a new sister sometime next year. Like wouldn't that be great! Yeah, life is good here. My new Mom and Dad say they are so lucky I came into their lives when I did. Well, let me tell you who the real lucky one is, and my name is Maxx, with two x's.

Max's "Available" Story

Max
Hello there, my name is Max (#1252). I am a 4-year-old neutered male weighing in at 85 pounds and I am house trained. I use the dog door at my foster home, but my foster mom is sure I probably have a nice way to let you know I need to go out. I am a big love sponge and enjoy spending time with people snuggling and soaking up attention. I also get along well with other dogs and used to sleep with a cat in my previous home. I walk well on lead and follow some of the basic commands such as sit, down, and come. I enjoy carrying toys around in my mouth and my foster mom and dad laugh at my "chipmunk cheeks" when I have a ball or two in my mouth.
Max
I would do well in a home with older children, as I can be energetic. I enjoy going for car rides and will lay quietly in the back for the trip. I would make a great walking or hiking partner. I am friendly and enjoy meeting new people.

I am looking for a home with a large yard where I can run and a family who will give me lots of attention. I sleep right next to the bed at night on my dog bed and will come up to snuggle if you invite me.
