When our first owner was deployed to Iraq, it seemed unlikely that Jackson and I would remain together. Finding a new home for two dogs on such short notice was an impossible task, and we were put into the care of the Humane Society. While with the Humane Society, we were kept in the same kennel. The Humane Society contacted Golden Bond to adopt Jackson but, whenever Jackson was removed from the kennel, and I was alone, I would get frightened and nervous hiding and chewing on my feet. But Golden Bond got involved and decided to do what they could to keep us together.
We tried a family or two without a good fit, until the Perkins' became interested early in 2006. They agreed to open their home and make us part of the family. But as the Perkins' were en route to Eugene, OR to meet us, Jackson had a mild seizure and we were separated once again. The Perkins' took me home for a week and spoiled me rotten while we waited for Jackson's vet to run a few tests. But at night, I still often chewed my feet because I missed Jackson so much.
We weren't sure we were going to have the big goofy Golden after all. But Jackson's seizure turned out to be caused by mild hypo-thyroid nothing that can't be fixed by regular medication. So, the next weekend it was back in the car to take that long trip from Seattle to Eugene once again. I was afraid I might be being returned, but, when I saw Jackson, my eyes lit up and I refused to go anywhere without him.
He's quite a chunk, but he's down to a manageable weight thanks to regular exercise and his new medication. But the Perkins' still have to watch him carefully because he loves food and will steal it whenever he has the opportunity. He's much more laid back than I am and he really mellows me out. He likes belly rubs, long naps, and stuffed animals.
I must say that I am quite the Daddy's girl and whatever he wants me to do I listen. I wasn't big on toys at first and was just happy with belly rubs and herding the 2 cats around the house, but I have decided that I like Kong toys. I've also learned to play fetch with tennis balls and I am becoming quite the retriever myself.
Now we spend all our time, running with Mom in the morning and evenings, chasing each other with toys and treats and making sure the cats are still where I can keep my eye on them. It's quite a busy schedule and it keeps both Jackson and I with our tongues hanging out, and our tails wagging.
Thank you Golden Bond!
