Success Story: Bruce (#441)

Bruce 441

Bruce

Recently, one of Golden Bond's volunteers reported, "I got a call from Reta (and Charles) today. They have been thinking about Bruce (#441) and how much they love him and how well he is doing with them. And they want to adopt him. They don't want him to have to leave their home as he is doing so well there. I am so happy they decided to keep him. You should see the love in Bruce's eyes for them. They are wonderful people."

As you have guessed by now, Bruce is (was!) Reta and Charles' foster golden. Eight-year-old Bruce had been abandoned. He was cold and frightened and so badly neglected that he lost 75% of his fur. He had an infection over most of his body, including his eyes and ears. With veterinary attention by Dr. Laird Goodman and limitless care and love from Reta and Charles, he is now recovering and doing very well.

This is truly a Christmas story telling of the love for and by a Golden Retriever that resulted in a happy ending for all.

It is with great sadness that Golden Bond Rescue shares the passing of Reta Hull. Reta and Charlie began fostering in July of 2002 with their first dog, Travis. They went on to foster Foxy, Bear, Ashley, Midas, and their most recent foster, Bruce. As you can see, Bruce was almost beyond hope when Reta and Charlie took him in. Bruce's fostering started with Charlie saying, "We will keep Bruce two months and no more." Then Bruce refused to step off their property, afraid he would never return to the best thing that ever happened to him. Shortly after, Reta and Charlie called one day saying, they just couldn't let Bruce go. Bruce was officially adopted on January 27, 2004. At that point their loving home was filled with three dogs and one cat.

The picture of Reta and Charlie with Bruce was taken at a recent visit to Murryhill Vet Clinic where Bruce was pronounced cured of all ailments. The Hulls and Dr. Laird Goodman worked together to make him the happy, confident and hairy dog you see in the pictures.

Reta died on Monday, March 8, 2004 and Bruce is still walking down the hall wondering where she is. When Bruce's time comes to cross the Rainbow Bridge, he will have the answer to that question and Reta will be there waiting with open arms. That reunion brings joyful thoughts at this sorrowful time.

Golden Bond is honored to have had Reta and Charlie as fosters for our Goldens. Every animal and person who passes through their door knows what a special home it is and will continue to be. Charlie, we love you and will never forget you. All Goldens should be so lucky as those mentioned above, whom you have fostered and sent on their way confident and in good health because of the care and love you gave them.

We'll see you and Bruce at the 2004 picnic!
