Golden Retriever Rescue
For the Love of Goldens
Adopted February 2004
Duchess (#478) and I first met at the Newport Animal Shelter. After a visit to the vet where she was spayed, the next few weeks were busy ones for all of us. She and Lady played with toys and each other for hours, while Blazer and Ginger the older Goldens watched from the sidelines.
On New Year's Day, our beloved Ginger crossed the Rainbow Bridge. We will always miss our sweet Golden girl. Duchess' arrival was definitely at the right time. Her puppy antics have made us all feel younger and more energetic.
Duchess is our "true" retriever. She loves the water and plays with balls, sticks and toys. Her favorite activity is to play at the beach and run through the ocean. We are so thankful for her presence and the positive contribution she makes to our lives.
Update June 16, 2004
Duchess (#478) is doing better as she gets older, and Lady has been teaching her some good things. Howeveer, we have just learned that Lady has degenerative bone disease in her right hip. We tried the medicine recommended by the vet (similar to Rimadyl) and she vomited three times on the second day of medication. So, stopped that medicine.
Have started her on a schedule with Bayer Aspirin (coated), and the Glucosimine/MSM, Chrondoitin(sp?), and this seems to help her, without any vomiting. In case you didn't know, Lady was also a rescue, as was Blazer.Lady and Duchess are best buddies, and they do everything together. Duchess is calming down quite a bit, and enjoys going for walks with Lady. For a while (about two weeks ago), Duchess was escaping from our fenced yard, to get to the water. She would always come back, and some of the neighbors, seeing her outside of our fence, would come and let her back in. Soooooo, we had to secure the fence in places with rebar, and that seems to have solved the problem. Yea!! I think that is all that I have to report. Her hair is coming in nicely as she is maturing. She still makes us laugh a lot, and is learning to respect and get along with the cats (5).
Regards, Phyllis
