Rudy #1852 & Marion #1853 were part of the Burns rescue in March. We brought them home in April once they were healthy enough to go into foster. Although we called it foster, we knew this would be their forever home.

They had a lot to learn. In fact, the only thing they didn’t need to learn was how to play together. That seems to consume about 75% of their day! Rudy is about five and Marion is about three. Of course they had never been housebroken and we hadn’t had a dog, let alone two dogs in many years, so we all learned together. But they are so smart, and really do want to please, so things have gone really well, with the occasional accident of course. Because of their past and lack of food, you would think they might be food aggressive, but they are absolutely perfect. They eat side by side and if one of our three cats walks by they don’t even notice. Marion tried counter surfing a few times the first day or two, but after a couple of corrections, that stopped. Learning to “sit” was the most difficult thing for her. She is so independent and when she saw Rudy “sit” she would just walk away and have none of it. However, now that she’s agreed to learn, she is one smart dog. She learned “down” in about ten minutes, and we are working on stay. Obedience classes are in the near future.

These dogs are a work in progress and every day they seem to understand more about how to be a regular dog. They didn’t know how to play with toys, walk on a leash, walk up and down stairs, sleep in an actual bed of their own and lots of the things we take for granted in a dog that’s been raised in a real home. But they are learning fast! They both love to go on walks in the park next door and they are on a first name basis with all the dogs in the neighborhood. Rudy is learning to catch a tennis ball, and Marion loves her soft squishy “baby”. It seems Rudy’s goal in life is to never leave his dad’s lap, and Marion’s goal is to never let Rudy have a peaceful moment to himself.

They adore each other and we are so glad we brought them both home. We haven’t smiled this much in years.
