The first few days I had Nilla (#1844) was as her foster parent. She was my first. My cats were outraged. My chickens wouldn't leave their coop. I became worried that I might have been overly idealistic about my lifestyle supporting the chaos that comes with a new dog. But I had a vision of fostering Goldens: loving and keeping them safe until they could transition into homes of their own. There was also something about Nilla. ...her exceptionally soulful eyes, her independence and her gentle undemanding affection.

About a week into her stay my cats started coming back in the house and the chickens decided she wasn't a threat. We even took in another foster dog. Everything was settling into a routine. And that's when I realized that it was going to take a minor miracle to pry this particular dog from me. I had fallen in love. Nilla is a dog, like other dogs. She isn't perfect, to say the least. She is a very enthusiastic squirrel chaser. When there is a squirrel around she can neither see nor hear me. She only uses the dog door if I am there to coax and encourage her, which renders it useless for the 9 hours a day I am at work. And yet, I love her still and look forward to coming home to her for many years to come. I am certain she will be a great ambassador welcoming the other Goldens we will foster in the future.
