Rex #2011

Adopted June 20 2010

Rex #2011_1Rex’s Story: Hi, I’m Rex (#2011), and I’m a 2 ½ half year-old happy boy (and rather handsome, if I do say so -- see photos). I don’t talk much about Life Before, but my owners did the right thing by relinquishing me to Golden Bond when economic hardships made it difficult to care for me. The good folks at GB gave me a great foster family. I was happy there but my foster mom kept whispering that there were people somewhere ready to love me more than I could imagine. Sure enough, Bob & Jeanne came to meet me, and it was love at first sight. I romped and played with them, and tried hard to be very good. I even sat on Jeanne’s lap so they couldn’t leave without me. I knew that their first Golden had died recently, and I wanted to fill their lives with love and affection (and sloppy kisses). Sure enough, the next weekend they came back to take me home, and oh boy! I must have a guardian angel; life is so good.

Rex #2011_2This furever home thing just rocks! I have my own squishy bed (tho’ I keep trying to negotiate a piece of the Big Bed...Dad says “not for dogs”), endless supplies of stuffies (which I carry around in my mouth, three or four at a time which makes my peeps laugh) and an awesome yard that goes on for miles (with my own personal fleet of bunnies--man, are they fast!). We live in the mountains, and for an apartment boy like myself the wild woods were a little intimidating at first--all those sights and sounds and smells! But I’m learning that the woods aren’t that scary, and our hikes are such fun! I love being on our boat, and bein’ the head-out-the-car-window kind of guy I just love the wind in my face when we’re at sail. Mountain lakes are the best for fetching sticks, and apparently I’m quite the swimmer. Who knew? Most of all I just love bein’ with my peeps, and knowing that they’re MINE. They tell me all the time how much they love me, and I know it’s true by their gentle pets, long hugs and happy tales of the life we have together.

Rex #2011_3A note from Rex’s People: As Rex said, we lost our 4 year old first Golden to lymphoma in December. Heartbroken, we knew we wanted the pitter patter of little (big, in Rex’s case) feet in the house again but approached the idea of another dog with caution. The folks at Golden Bond were amazing; all-volunteer, and all heart. They listened to our fears and concerns, and were patient when we said no to the first dog we met. They advised: wait for the best match. And match they did; Rex is a perfect fit for us. Daily we shake our heads in amazement as he fits in and adds to our life in ways we couldn’t have imagined.

The first week or so was lots of “getting acquainted”, although he surprised us with his mellowness amongst all the new and unknown. We did what’s NOT recommended; having a previous engagement we drove straight to Cannon Beach for the weekend after picking him up from his foster family in Hillsboro. He seemed to love the beach, and I think was a little disappointed that there wasn’t an ocean and room service at his forever home. Establishing a routine was very important once we were home; wherever we were, and whatever was dependable was helpful for him. We’re trying to give him time and patience while he unpacks his bags (although he seems to have few real issues). He’s really a very good dog; he doesn’t counter-surf or eat socks, he’s completely trustworthy in the house alone and is incredibly affectionate and loving. We’ve found working with a trainer to be a great experience; helping Rex to conquer a few fears and learn new skills is a terrific way to build our relationship together.

Rex #2011_4He makes us laugh at his antics, be proud of his hard work and success in training, and smile with full hearts at the love he so freely gives. Special thanks to Norm, for endless time answering questions, to Barb for her wisdom and encouragement, and to Monique, Dan & Charlie for being the very best Foster Family a pup could ever want. You made the adoption process very sweet, and we are grateful for all the good folks at Golden Bond for your great work. The bumper sticker now on my car says it all: Who Rescued Who? Welcome Home, Rex.
