TILLY’S TALE
My name is Tilly (1966) and I am a beautiful (so my new parents say) 2 ½ year old female Golden Retriever. I grew on a small ranch in Bandon. I’ve heard that many Golden’s grow up in abusive homes. That was certainly not the case with moi. My people mom loved me very much, plus I was surrounded by brothers, sisters, an aunt, my grandma and my doggie mom. But I could tell it was getting harder and harder for my people mom to take care of all of us. One day everything changed. A strange car pulled into the yard and we all got very excited…we love visitors. The people seemed nice and we all let them pet us but they seemed to pay the most attention to me. I got a little bored with this and proceeded to dash around the house with my mom and grandma.
After a while the man and woman got up to leave and quite strangely put a leash on me and led me out to their truck. I looked at my people mom and she indicated it was o.k., but she looked both sad and happy. If it was o.k. with her, it was o.k. with me, so off we went. Boy did life change. The big difference is that I get to stay in the house all the time and go outside when I choose to go out. That’s kind of cool. Oh yeah, and lots and lots of toys.
I have balls of different sizes, shapes and colors. I have stuffed animals too. There are two cats living there too. They both hid under the bed for a couple of days but then figured out I wasn’t going to eat them. The old fat cat is cool, but the young black one is weird. I didn’t used to travel much, but now we get in the truck nearly every day and go for walks on the beach and in the forest. I love to chase seabirds, squirrels and rabbits. I am not sure what I would do I caught one.
I liked my new home, but I really missed all the other dogs I lived with. I’m not ashamed to admit I was feeling blue. Then nineteen days after I arrived in my new home my new people left and came home hours later with another Golden that looked a lot like me. I like him a lot. He smells familiar, but I’ll let him tell his story.
CHANCES TAIL
My name is Chance (#1974) and I am also a 2 ½ year old Golden Retriever. But, I am all boy. I lived with a bunch of other Golden’s. I really like other dogs there, especially the girls. I may have liked them too much. My people dad was a breeder of Golden’s and one day I climbed a fence and visited one of the female Golden Retrievers. About 9 weeks after my visit my girl friend had puppies…12 of them. My people dad wasn’t happy. It was something about me and those puppies. I still haven’t figured it out.
Shortly thereafter we went for a ride. I saw my dad talking to a couple of people. After a while they put me in their car and off we went. I’ve been here a while so I guess this is my Forever Home. I like the other dog named Tilly. It seems as if we have met before. I asked her when she was born and she said July 10, 2007. I said “Wow girl. That is my birthday!” What a coincidence. I love to chase her, and then she will chase me. If she has a toy and I really want it she will let me have it and not make a big deal of it. She’s cool.
I’m not sure about those cats though. The old fat one is o.k., but the little black one is a weirdo. And what’s with the hiding under bed for three days? Did they think I was going to eat them? O.k., I could eat the little black one, maybe. Another great thing is I get to sleep in the house!
At the kennel I was up at sunrise with the other dogs. It is tough getting my new humans up at that time. My trick is to grab a toy and go back into the bedroom early in the morning with a toy in my mouth grunting. I have been gifted with a large heavy tail, so I stand in the door way and drum my tail against the bedroom door. Then my people dad says things to me I don’t understand. My mom says “Don’t swear in front of the children”
All in all, life is good.
