Red's Adoption Story
Adopted July 24, 2002
Hi Diana,
Life can be funny at times!
You may recall that the gal who was interested in meeting Chauncey and I have been having a heck of a time coordinating our schedules. This was fine as Chauncey has started on allergy shots and it gave us time to get him regulated.
Eileen had adopted a 14 year old golden with cancer from us last year and sadly Chelsea died from osteosarcoma around Christmas. Eileen loves the seniors, and especially those with special needs -- much like myself! Well, this past Saturday we were having a group of golden friends and their dogs over for a doggie swim party so I asked Eileen to come here to meet Chauncey and she could take him home for an overnight to see how it went with her dogs and cats. Long story short when she got here she had read the info about Red on the web and asked me which dog (Chauncey or Red) would be less likely to be adopted. Of course I said Red because of all his issues. Well, she fell in love with Red and decided to take him home to see how things went. She called me on Sunday to say things were looking good and today I had an email from her saying she wanted to formally adopt him!
One of her dogs has seizure disorder and she has gone through cognitive disorder with another of her dogs (now at the Bridge). She felt well equipped to handle Red's problems. She said Red fit in seamlessly with her gang and that he was chasing a ball and trying so hard to play with her dogs. He was doing that here, too, so I'm not surprised.
So...wonders never cease and there still are incredibly wonderful humans with hearts of gold who realize that goldens like Red are a true gift!Thank you again for bringing him to us! Because you cared he is now enjoying the rest of his life.
Best regards,
Helen and Bob
Red's First Placement Story, June 28, 2000
We know it's not easy for even the most well-rounded golden to come into a place with so many other dogs, but despite all the chaos, Red has managed to make himself at home. He has tried his paws at playing but gets himself a little too excited so we have to stop play sessions and let him calm down. I suspect with time he will get the knack of the game ;-)
We'll be heading back to Goldentown for the long 4th of July weekend so Red will have lots more room to hone his playing skills! Thanks to Diana and everyone at Golden Bond for giving us the opportunity to make Red part of our wonderful gaggle of geriatric goldens!
Cheers,
Helen and Bob
June 28,2002
Red (#214) has gone to join Chauncey (#148) at Goldentown. There he will live with several other special needs dogs with the loving and experienced Helen and Bob Redlus who founded Golden Retrievers in Cyberspace/Goldentown in 1994 as a sanctuary and hospice for goldens. Presently Goldentown is located in the Redlus' home, but eventually will move to a 26 acre property in Raymond, California, which is being prepared as Goldentown's permanent home. We want everyone at Golden Bond and viewers of this web site to know of the wonderful work this non profit, all volunteer organization is doing to allow special needs goldens to live out their lives in a dignified and happy manner, and with excellent care, until their time comes to go to the Rainbow Bridge.
We were fortunate to be able to take Red to Raymond and see the wonderful Goldentown property that will be its eventual permanent home. Upon arrival, there were the customary introduction maneuvers with the 9 goldens in his new pack and the exploration of the Goldentown compound. Red then inspected the house and found "his spot" on a throw rug at the foot of Helen and Bob's bed, whereupon, he took a four hour nap to recuperate from the events of the day. That was his announcement that he had moved in and planned to stay.
All of us at Golden Bond are grateful that Red has the opportunity to live at Goldentown and we wish him a long and happy life. Anyone wanting to learn more about the work of Goldentown can view their web site here.
