Crossed the Rainbow Bridge September 20, 2010

It has taken awhile to write this tribute to our Golden Boy, but we thought it was time. In early 2006 we decided to adopt a family dog.  We had never owned a dog (cat people), but after talking with our friends at Frontier Veterinary Hospital, we followed their recommendation and contacted Golden Bond Rescue of Oregon. After an application was completed we scheduled our first home visit and understood that we might have visits from a number of potential adoptees. Our first visit was with Pat  and she brought along Calvin (#1351). We learned that Calvin had been found as a stray with double pneumonia and fur matted so badly that he was shaved everywhere except his ears and the end of his tail.  He looked unlike any Golden we had envisioned, but there was something about the boy. After thinking for a day, we called Pat back and Calvin came to live with us on February 17, 2006. He was home.

For the better part of the next 4 years he proceeded to fill our house with love, companionship, and friendship. He put up with our cats (he took the high road), found that toys are fun things, provided endless opportunities for belly rubs, learned that the couch was a great place to relax, jumped for joy just to see us come through the door, and somehow found the time to work his way deeper into our hearts every day.

Calvin was a senior when he arrived, but he still loved to chase squirrels (and if you weren’t paying attention, any cat that wasn’t his). He loved car rides and long walks, whether warm summer nights or our famous rainy winter evenings, wherever we were – he was. Late last year Calvin had started to go a little slower, just didn’t seem to be his usual self, so a few days later we took him in for a checkup.  The news was not good and we were forced into a decision we had always hoped never to make. Calvin passed away September 20th, 2010.
