The Goldens We Meet on our Travels

By Katherine Keller

GRCA National Specialty Award Winner Andy
I was recently on a flight from Lincoln, Nebraska with a very special passenger, Andy, the golden retriever.

Goldens do get very special treatment, especially when they are service dogs, too! When I first saw him he had the window seat — looking out the window — but I guess his owner wanted the view instead.

Andy was on his way to the Golden Retriever Club of America (GRCA) National Specialty in Everett, Washington via Denver to give a demonstration on search and rescue, as well as represent Golden Retriever Rescue in Nebraska (GRRIN). Lincoln, Nebraska, is one of the recognized field stations for teaching dogs to be search and rescue, cadaver dogs, etc., for FEMA, and other national organizations for dog related jobs.

Andy was adopted from GRRIN when he was one year old. His owners were going to have him put down because of his separation anxiety, but was given a second chance by being relinquished to GRRIN. His new owners had a tough year, but through it all, never gave up on Andy and worked with him to make his life better. He went through training in Lincoln, Nebraska, to become a "live find" search and rescue dog, and his most recent job was helping to find victims of Katrina. He is a very special dog, that was given a very special "second chance" through another great rescue organization, GRRIN.

At the GRCA National Specialty, Andy won outstanding Golden Rescue dog for 2007 and received a special award as he is an Urban Search and Rescue dog for FEMA.
